Red Alerts in Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia as Flooding Cuts Adriatic Rail Link

An Azores high is forecast to end the storm by Easter.

Overview

  • Civil Protection kept red alerts in place Thursday for parts of the three regions following Wednesday’s overflow of the Osento river that severed the PescaraFoggia rail line between Porto di Vasto and Fossacesia.
  • In Molise, the Liscione reservoir neared its regulation limit with controlled releases above 500 cubic meters per second, triggering evacuations in Termoli, closure of the A14 Termoli toll gate, and shutdowns in the industrial area.
  • Fire crews logged hundreds of operations across the area, and in the Foggia province they rescued about 50 motorists and 40 residents after the Cervaro overflow left roads under water and choked with mud and debris.
  • Knock-on damage widened to key routes and services with a closed stretch of the SS16 Adriatica, flooded farmland reported by farm groups, a broken water main that left Penne hospital on tanker supply, and pre-alert monitoring at the Occhito dam.
  • Forecasters say conditions will ease from Friday as high pressure builds, with sunnier, warmer weather expected over the Easter weekend after days of heavy rain, strong winds and exceptional mountain snow.
