- Extraordinary downpours dumped up to about 956 millimeters in Geoje and more than 700 millimeters in nearby Tongyeong over the Aug. 15–17 period, producing hourly rates the Korea Meteorological Administration said were rare for the region.
- A landslide struck an apartment building in Okpo-dong, Geoje on Monday, burying the first floor and killing one resident while injuring others and prompting multiple rescues.
- Authorities logged more than 2,500 damage reports including flooded homes, blocked roads and toppled trees, with roughly 560 people evacuated and hundreds of households experiencing power or water disruptions.
- The Interior Ministry activated a national Level 1 emergency response and officials including the prime minister called for all available police, fire and rescue resources to aid evacuations and recovery.
