Record March Heat Fuels Critical Fire Weather Across Colorado

A brief cooldown arrives Sunday before warmth and fire danger are forecast to ramp back up early next week.

Overview

  • Red Flag Warnings cover much of the state today, commonly from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., including the I-25 corridor, High Country and parts of the eastern plains.
  • Plains temperatures are reaching the upper 80s to low 90s, with several locations expected to set all-time March records and Denver possibly touching 90 degrees for the first time on record this month.
  • Very low humidity, in some areas near single digits, combined with gusts of 30–45 mph and downslope warming are creating conditions for rapid and erratic fire spread.
  • Active fires in southern Colorado have prompted evacuations in Fremont County, with heavy air operations resuming and an evacuation center open at Pathfinder Park in Florence, as smoke reduces air quality in El Paso and Pueblo counties.
  • A drier cold front late Saturday will lower temperatures on Sunday, yet forecasts call for a quick return to 80s by midweek with elevated to critical fire weather likely to redevelop.
