Rebuilt Mumbai Central Flyover Opens After Virtual Inauguration, Renamed Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar

The ahead-of-schedule project reflects close inter-agency coordination with full safety clearances.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the TardeoNagpada–Mumbai Central link on February 26 via videoconference, and it is now open to traffic.
  • The flyover measures 333 metres with a 7-metre carriageway and footpaths on both sides, including a 36.90-metre span within railway limits.
  • The new structure replaces a 130-year-old bridge found unsafe in a 2018 audit, restoring an east–west connection disrupted for roughly two years.
  • BMC completed construction in 15 months and six days, nearly four months early, coordinating with Western Railway, traffic police and ward offices despite utility relocations and legal hurdles.
  • Load tests, structural stability and safety certifications and a railway no-objection certificate were secured before opening, and signage reflecting the new name will be updated.
