Rebassa Wins Sant Jordi as Carré‑Pons Takes Òmnium at Relaunched Nit de les Lletres

A prime-time relaunch spotlighted Catalan literature through new prizes and explicit calls to strengthen the language.

Overview

  • The Sant Jordi novel prize (€75,000) went to Carles Rebassa for Prometeu de mil maneres, a Palma-set story steeped in class conflict, tourism pressures and dangerous love.
  • Antònia Carré-Pons won the Òmnium Best Novel of the Year (€25,000) for La gran família, and she urged better gender balance after noting only two of ten finalists were women.
  • Co-organized by Òmnium Cultural and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, the 75th edition shifted off Santa Llúcia night and filled MNAC’s Sala Oval on Montjuïc.
  • Newly created awards debuted with Josep R. Cerdà taking the Àngel Guimerà for drama, Cristina Genebat earning Lo Somni for new literary talent and Berta Cusó winning the Vinyeta FICOMIC for best comic in Catalan.
  • In his acceptance speech, Rebassa pressed for legislation that would make Catalan indispensable across the Països Catalans.
