RDSO Sets Jan 14–15 Safety Trials for 18-Car Mumbai Suburban Rakes

Railway officials say the tests are mandatory checks that will inform approvals rather than trigger immediate 18-car services.

Overview

  • Trials will run on the VirarDahanu Road section of Western Railway to allow sustained higher-speed testing under controlled conditions.
  • Two MRVC Phase‑II AC EMU variants will be assessed: Bombardier propulsion up to 110 km/h and Medha systems up to 105 km/h.
  • Emergency braking distance and coupler force measurements will validate stopping performance and longitudinal loads for longer formations.
  • Western Railway issued clearances in December and has been tasked with ensuring rake readiness and appropriate loading to reflect real operations.
  • Results will guide regulatory clearance and the MUTP capacity‑expansion roadmap, with procurement and infrastructure upgrades expected to span years.
