Overview
- Backpackers Lucas Fowler and Chynna Deese were last seen on July 13 in Fort Nelson, and their bodies were found roughly 36 hours later near Liard Hot Springs along the Alaska Highway.
- On July 19, police discovered a burned pickup near Dease Lake and an unidentified body that was later confirmed as University of British Columbia lecturer Leonard Dyck.
- RCMP identified Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, as suspects and charged them with second-degree murder in Dyck’s death.
- The pair fled in Dyck’s grey Toyota RAV4, traveling about 3,000 kilometers before abandoning the vehicle burned out in northern Manitoba.
- The nationwide search ended in August when police found both suspects dead in the Manitoba wilderness, with post-mortems ruling suicide, and RCMP later closed all three investigations while citing major challenges in determining motive.
