RCMP Charge Two in Alberta Highway Shooting That Killed International Student

Police say the attack appears partially random with no sign of hate motivation.

Overview

  • RCMP, which announced the charges Wednesday, said they have identified all suspects in the March 14 shooting near Leduc.
  • Police charged 18-year-old Jimmy Gassner with second-degree murder as the alleged shooter and 23-year-old Deon Libsekil with second-degree murder and accessory after the fact.
  • Investigators said a pickup pulled alongside Barinder Singh’s car on the QEII Highway, a hand gesture was exchanged, and shots from the truck struck him in the neck before it sped off.
  • Detectives ruled out hate, robbery, road rage, and gang initiation as motives, described the killing as partially random, and urged Sikh community members not to be alarmed.
  • Both accused were known to police, and RCMP said the investigation continues as officers stay in touch with Singh’s family outside Canada.
