Rays Put Cleavinger and Rodríguez on 15-Day IL, Promote Ty Johnson

Rays officials say short shutdowns aim to protect recovering pitchers as they turn to a high-performing Triple-A reliever to stabilize late-inning work.

Overview

  • Left-hander Garrett Cleavinger was placed on the 15-day injured list with left forearm tightness and will be shut down for a short period, manager Kevin Cash said.
  • Cleavinger has struggled recently, giving up 10 runs in 8 2/3 innings since Aug. 1 and leaving recent appearances after failing to record outs.
  • Right-hander Manuel Rodríguez was also moved to the 15-day IL with a back strain, further reducing the Rays’ available late-inning options.
  • The club called up Ty Johnson from Triple-A Durham for his major-league debut after he posted a 3.03 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and an especially dominant August following a move to the bullpen.
  • The roster changes free roster space for recovery and let the Rays test internal depth; the team will monitor Cleavinger’s short shutdown and evaluate Johnson’s ability to provide immediate relief innings.
