Ravenswood Opens East Palo Alto’s First Regulation-Size Football Field

Donor-driven funding over six years delivered a community field now open for public use.

Overview

  • A Feb. 4 grand opening at Los Robles–Ronald McNair drew elected officials and NFL players Mekhi Blackmon, Rejzohn Wright and Nahshon Wright, who grew up playing there.
  • The facility is regulation size for football, can host soccer, and features artificial turf, drainage, new scoreboards, bleachers and a perimeter walking path.
  • Ravenswood City School District built the field without local bond dollars after a multi-year fundraising effort supported by partners including the Bay Area Host Committee, San Mateo County, the City of East Palo Alto, Rep. Kevin Mullin, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and the Ravenswood Education Foundation.
  • The timing of the celebration aligned with major sports attention in the region as Super Bowl XL approaches.
  • Coverage differs on total cost, with Almanac News reporting $4.2 million and ABC7 reporting $5.5 million, and the district says the field is available for after-hours community reservations.
