Rare Loggerhead–Kemp’s Ridley Hybrid Turtle Released From Jekyll Island

Tagged for a U.S. Navy–supported research project, the juvenile named Earl Grey will be tracked to study sea turtle movements to inform conservation.

Overview

  • The juvenile turtle was released Thursday after about six months of rehabilitation at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island.
  • Genetic testing confirmed the animal is a first-generation hybrid with a loggerhead father and a Kemp’s ridley mother.
  • Rescuers found the turtle cold-stunned on a Brewster, Massachusetts, beach last November and it was first treated at the New England Aquarium before transfer to Georgia.
  • Before release the center fitted Earl Grey with a satellite tag as part of a U.S. Navy–supported study led by the University of Central Florida to track movement and surfacing behavior for better population estimates.
  • Hybrid sea turtles are rarely documented so researchers say this case highlights the need for wider genetic testing and long-term tracking to understand possible effects on reproduction and conservation strategies while Jekyll Island’s nesting work continues to support regional recovery.
