Rare Blue Whales Documented Off Southern New England in Back-to-Back Surveys

The observations coincide with a federal rollback of fishing limits in the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts monument.

  • New England Aquarium scientists recorded three blue whales within 24 hours, the first time the institution has documented the species in its southern New England survey area.
  • One whale was seen near the base of Lydonia Canyon on Feb. 27, followed by two whales 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard on Feb. 28, roughly 170 miles apart.
