Rare 15-Foot Great White Filmed Circling Boat Off Cape Canaveral

Researchers say the sighting fits expected southward migrations toward medium-temperature waters, with little danger near beaches.

Overview

  • A group of fishermen led by Captain Blair Wiggins recorded the shark as it swam near their vessel off Florida’s Space Coast.
  • The animal, estimated at about 15 feet long, circled the boat for roughly 20 minutes about five miles east of the port.
  • Wiggins described the shark as “a monster” and said he could not put his arms halfway around its body.
  • Wiggins alerted researchers, who have no confirmed tag on this individual and therefore no tracking data.
  • Florida Tech’s Dr. Toby Daly-Engel said the encounter matches seasonal southward movement, with more sightings possible and low risk to swimmers because great whites typically remain offshore.
