Overview
- The appointment, announced Thursday, followed a unanimous recommendation by a selection panel convened by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana and chaired by former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene.
- Makhubu will serve a five-year term starting 1 May 2026, succeeding Edward Kieswetter, whose contract ends on 30 April, and he has served as deputy commissioner since May 2023.
- In remarks carried Saturday, Makhubu said he will keep SARS’s current playbook and intensify the fight against the illicit economy in coordination with other government bodies.
- The Presidency and SARS framed the move as continuity after Vision 2024 produced a 7.6% compound annual rise in revenue collections and a 3.4‑percentage‑point increase in voluntary compliance.
- Outgoing commissioner Edward Kieswetter welcomed the decision, saying Makhubu is eminently qualified and well versed in the institution’s operations.
