Ramaphosa Brings NBI Into Operation Vulindlela Phase 2 to Strengthen Municipal Services
The move signals a tighter business–government push to speed up basic service repairs that can unlock jobs.
Overview
- President Cyril Ramaphosa used the National Business Initiative’s 30th anniversary event in Sandton to announce that the NBI’s Technical Assistance and Mentorship Development unit will join Operation Vulindlela Phase 2 to support municipal service delivery.
- Operation Vulindlela is the government’s reform drive that targets big bottlenecks such as electricity, rail, ports, water systems and failing local governments to make it easier for firms to invest and hire.
- Ramaphosa urged companies to expand practical training and job placement for young people, calling for stronger skills-to-jobs matching and praising models that link classroom learning to immediate work placement.
- He said the economy shows signs of recovery, citing improving growth, more jobs, a stabilising debt load, an improved sovereign outlook, Eskom’s return to profit last year, record R890 billion in new investment pledges and a planned R1 trillion infrastructure build over three years.
- The NBI’s roots in the Consultative Business Movement, which backed CODESA talks and supported the IEC and the RDP, underpin its track record on projects like Business against Crime, EQIP, the Youth Employment Service and the CEO Initiative.
