Rainout Condenses Indy 500 Qualifying to One Day on Sunday

A return to the Top 12 plus Fast Six puts a premium on a single clean attempt per car.

Overview

  • Following Saturday's rainout, IndyCar shifted all Indianapolis 500 qualifying to a single Sunday program.
  • Each of the 33 entries gets one four-lap run starting at noon ET with no time withdrawals permitted, followed by a Top 12 at 4:30 p.m. then a Fast Six at 6 p.m.
  • The revised plan scraps the new Final 15 round and reverts to the recent two-stage format to set the pole and rows one and two.
  • Fast Friday set the benchmark, with Felix Rosenqvist quickest overall at 233.372 mph and Scott McLaughlin fastest without a tow at 232.674 mph.
  • Heavy rain washed rubber off the track and warmer Sunday temperatures are expected, which could reduce grip and reshuffle qualifying form.
