Querétaro Raid Uncovers Weapons and Exotic Fauna, Including Jaguars and Bengal Tiger Cubs

Environmental regulators will seek charges over suspected illegal possession of protected wildlife.

Overview

  • State and federal authorities executed a January 11 search of a Santa Rosa Jáuregui property tied to a health-crimes investigation and secured the site.
  • Investigators seized long and short firearms, assorted ammunition, official documents, vehicle plates and a bill counter.
  • Two adult jaguars and two Bengal tiger cubs were found along with macaws, parrots, peacocks, a raccoon, horses, dogs and other exotic birds.
  • Profepa, working with a certified wildlife facility, relocated birds and chemically contained the jaguars for veterinary checks, confirming one had a microchip and the other lacked markings.
  • The tiger cubs remain under custody at the property pending transfer to a suitable specialized facility as inquiries continue and Profepa prepares a complaint carrying potential prison terms and fines under federal law.
