Overview
- Joshua Alvarado was indicted Tuesday by a Nassau County grand jury on manslaughter and drug-impaired driving charges, the district attorney said.
- Prosecutors say toxicology found Xanax, clonazepam, and a potent illegal synthetic known as “street Xanax” in his system.
- Investigators say he fell asleep at a red light while driving a commercial pickup to a service call, then drove onto the sidewalk and struck 70-year-old John Miro at Sunrise Highway and Merrick Avenue.
- Miro died March 6 after a week in the hospital, and prosecutors say a conviction could bring a 7 to 15 year prison term.
- Alvarado pleaded not guilty, is being held without bail, and is due back in court May 5.
