Queen Camilla Hails Wine Heritage in Impromptu Speech at Vintners’ Hall

The Queen marked a return to the City livery company with gifts honoring her family's wine legacy.

Overview

  • Visiting Vintners’ Hall on 18 February, Camilla attended a reception hosted by Master Vintner Richard Wilson as a member of the Worshipful Company of Vintners.
  • She was presented with a glass, a Vintners’ Company Pauillac 2016, and a 1928 first edition of A Book Of Wine written by her grandfather Philip Morton Shand.
  • In a spontaneous address, she said her love of wine is “in my blood,” recalled that “we drank wine as children,” and remembered learning to spit during tastings in Bordeaux with her father, Major Bruce Shand.
  • She met Swan Uppers in the hall’s historic room and said she would “definitely” return to watch a Swan Upping.
  • Her departure was greeted with the Company’s traditional five cheers, as coverage noted the Vintners’ role as a Great Twelve livery company long linked to the international wine trade.
