Qinwen Zheng Donates 1 Million Yuan for Gyirong Rescue and Rebuild

The recorded gift will fund emergency rescue and infrastructure recovery as teams continue to count casualties from a glacier-triggered landslide.

Overview

  • A glacial collapse and resulting landslide and flash floods struck Gyirong County on Aug. 26, destroying the Gyirong Port area and leaving reported death and missing figures still developing.
  • The China Charity Federation has officially recorded Zheng Qinwen’s 1 million yuan (about $150,000) donation earmarked for emergency rescue, transitional resettlement and post-disaster reconstruction in Gyirong County.
  • Zheng is the only high-profile tennis player publicly reported to have donated so far and she has said she will follow relief progress closely.
  • Major Chinese companies have also given funds, with Anta Group, BYD and Pinduoduo each reported to have donated 10 million yuan for relief efforts.
  • Scientists say growing glacier instability from human-caused warming raises the risk of similar collapses, which increases the need for urgent search-and-rescue capacity and stronger mountain infrastructure in the Himalaya region.
