Overview
- The QFA published a statement on June 5 confirming a “Qatari Fans Delegation Program” that it said would sponsor roughly 1,000 people by covering flight tickets via Qatar Airways, hotel stays and local transportation.
- Reporting by the Associated Press and others added that participants traveled on chartered jets, stayed in high-end hotels, used organized buses between host cities and were given branded “Fanbox” kits with replica shirts and flags.
- Several outlets reported that many beneficiaries had little prior experience with football and that as many as 2,000 people attended Qatar’s match with complimentary or sponsored packages, but those specific attendance and background claims are only partly corroborated.
- Qatar’s group-stage elimination limited any competitive effect of the program and left open the question of how much influence the sponsored supporters had on stadium atmosphere during the tournament.
- The initiative recalls scrutiny after the 2022 World Cup over organized crowd support and could deepen reputational pressure on Qatar and prompt closer attention to ticketing and crowd-authenticity checks at future FIFA events.
