PWHL Detroit Hires Josh Sciba as Inaugural Head Coach

His Olympic and NCAA coaching background positions Detroit to begin roster construction before the June expansion signing window and the June 17 draft.

Overview

  • PWHL Detroit announced on May 28 that Josh Sciba will be the franchise’s first head coach, returning the Westland native to Michigan to lead the club’s launch.
  • Sciba spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the PWHL’s New York Sirens and served on the U.S. women’s national team staff that won Olympic gold in February, giving him recent international experience.
  • He brings more than 15 years of women’s hockey coaching at the college level, including head-coach work at Union and assistant roles at Colgate and Niagara, which the team cited as key to his hiring.
  • General manager Manon Rhéaume called Sciba a strong fit for Detroit’s identity and culture, and the pair will steer immediate roster steps ahead of the league’s early June signing window and the June 17 draft at Detroit’s Fox Theatre.
  • The hire advances the PWHL’s rapid expansion plan as the league doubles to 12 teams for 2026–27; PWHL Detroit will play home games at Little Caesars Arena while the club finalizes its name and logo.
