Punjab Imposes Section 144 Around Airports and Restricts Murree Mall Road for Eid

The measures aim to reduce bird strikes and other hazards to prevent disruptions to flight operations.

Overview

  • The Punjab Home Department issued a 30-day order Thursday banning pigeon flying, laser lights and the dumping of meat or animal waste within a 13-kilometre radius of all PAF airbases and commercial airports in the province.
  • The home secretary invoked Section 144(6) of the Criminal Procedure Code to impose the airport-area restrictions with immediate effect and directed district administrations and police to enforce the bans.
  • Murree’s deputy commissioner separately enforced Section 144 to allow only families on Mall Road from May 20 to May 31 to manage expected Eidul Azha tourist crowds and maintain public order.
  • Officials said the airport rules respond to operational risks because discarded meat and waste attract birds and laser beams can interfere with pilots, and they ordered special cleanliness drives around airport perimeters.
  • The moves follow media reports of recent airport incidents that underscore safety concerns, and authorities warned of strict action against violators while monitoring compliance during the enforcement periods.
