Pune to Shift to Alternate-Day Water Supply From June 15

City officials say rationing is necessary to stretch dwindling dam stocks ahead of a below-normal monsoon forecast.

Overview

  • Pune Municipal Corporation announced this week that the city will move to alternate-day water supply starting June 15 to conserve resources until rains improve.
  • Officials cite falling storage in the Khadakwasla, Bhama Askhed and Pawana reservoirs and a revised India Meteorological Department forecast that projects below-normal monsoon rainfall.
  • The state Water Resources Department advised a 15 percent cut in consumption and local leaders said the rationing follows that recommendation and recent contingency planning by PMC.
  • The civic administration plans measures to reduce nonessential use, including orders to close vehicle-washing centres and pools, restrict drinking-water use at construction sites, expand treated wastewater reuse, and deploy inspection squads.
  • Residents warned of hardship and higher demand for private tankers, while PMC will issue a municipal commissioner’s circular and a ward-wise supply timetable within about 48 hours to guide implementation.
