Pune to Open First 1.5-Km Mula–Mutha Riverfront Stretch on Feb. 15

The launch marks the start of PMC’s phased riverfront program pairing flood protection with new public spaces under court‑mandated environmental safeguards.

Overview

  • The Sangamwadi segment, the first to be finished, will be open daily from 6–9 am and 5–8 pm for walking and cycling.
  • It forms part of the 3.7-km Sangamwadi–Bund Garden phase, which is about 90% complete, according to the city engineer.
  • PMC targets completion of roughly 5 km between Sangamwadi and Kalyani Nagar by the end of March 2026.
  • The broader 44.4-km effort, budgeted at about Rs 4,700–4,727 crore and modeled on Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati riverfront, includes embankments, parks, ghats, ramps, staircases and proposed barrages.
  • The project advances under NGT and Supreme Court directions requiring environmental clearance as activists raise concerns about river ecology and monsoon flood risk.
