Pune Rural Police Launch Six-Month Laser Speed Camera Pilot on Old MumbaiPune Highway

The data-driven trial will test targeted speed enforcement on high-risk stretches to steer future road safety policy.

Overview

  • Three TruCam II devices are now operating in the Lonavala and Vadgaon-Maval jurisdictions under Pune Rural Police.
  • The pilot is run with the Global Road Safety Partnership under Bloomberg Philanthropies’ road safety initiative, with equipment formally handed over by advisor Paul Simcox.
  • TruCam II measures speeds up to 320 km/h day or night, can be handheld, tripod- or vehicle-mounted, and captures photo and video evidence including helmet, seat-belt and mobile-phone violations.
  • About 40 officers were trained by GRSP in May 2025, with additional practical sessions for local units in November 2025 and February 2026.
  • Officials say findings from the six-month deployment will be used to refine enforcement and support efforts to cut fatalities after 983 road deaths were recorded in 2023.
