Puebla to Put Local ‘Puebla Cinco de Mayo’ Foods in School Cooperatives Next School Year

The Sabor a Puebla program aims to improve child nutrition by using nutritionally vetted local products to open stable sales channels for small Puebla producers.

Overview

  • Officials announced on July 1 and 2 that the pilot will begin in August with a school-year rollout that replaces junk food in cooperatives with Puebla Cinco de Mayo products.
  • The state says the plan has authorization from the Secretaría de Educación Pública and the backing of the Secretaría de Salud to ensure participating products meet nutritional criteria for children.
  • Puebla’s brand currently lists 283 registered brands from 56 municipalities and a catalog of 2,507 products while 140 cooperatives participate and about 60 more are registering.
  • Sedetra reported two export shipments to the United States in the past six months that sent 56 products from 17 brands, totaling roughly $1 million in sales and 19 tonnes shipped.
  • The program sets concrete commercial targets including a pilot of 50 schools expanding later to 200, and an increase in local points of sale from 60 to 110 this month to boost producer incomes and build local market channels.
