Overview
- Publix expanded the recall on Thursday to cover all lots of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries sold in eight states after epidemiology and product traceback prompted broader action.
- The recalled items include 10-oz and 48-oz packages of blueberries and mixed berries identified by specific UPCs and were distributed to stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
- The supplier Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. first recalled a single lot on July 3 and Publix had placed an internal stop-sale on the frozen GreenWise products at the end of June.
- Public health agencies have linked the products to a Shiga toxin–producing E. coli strain, O145:H28, in an outbreak that has produced 12 confirmed cases and four hospitalizations to date.
- Consumers are urged not to eat the products, to discard them or return them to Publix for a full refund, and to note that frozen fruit can remain in home freezers long after it is removed from store shelves which can extend exposure risk.
