Public EV Charging Now Cheaper Per Mile Than Petrol or Diesel in UK

A fuel-price surge has flipped running costs, sharpening calls to cut VAT on public charging.

Overview

  • ChargeUK, citing Friday's RAC Fuel Watch and Zapmap data, said standard public charging at about 54p per kWh works out to roughly 15p per mile, below petrol at 17p and diesel at 17.5p.
  • Costs vary by how people charge, with an 80/20 mix of standard and rapid at about 16p per mile, exclusive ultra-rapid use costing more than fuel, and home charging as low as 2p per mile.
  • Rising pump prices linked to the war in Iran pushed petrol and diesel above public charging, even after a 38% rise in public-charging prices between 2021 and 2025.
  • RAC, Zapmap and ChargeUK urged the government to cut VAT on public charging from 20% to 5% to match home electricity and make savings stick.
  • Autotrader reported the average new EV price has dipped below the average petrol car price for the first time, which could speed up the switch to electric.
