PS5-Linux Released Publicly to Run Ubuntu on Select PS5 Phat Consoles

The open-source tools let owners of older disc-based systems repurpose the console as a Linux PC under a temporary setup suited to tinkerers.

Overview

  • Security engineer Andy Nguyen published the ps5-linux toolchain on GitHub on Wednesday, enabling Linux boots on disc-based PS5 Phat consoles running 3.xx or 4.xx firmware.
  • The setup uses the umtx2 jailbreak to trigger a payload for a patched hypervisor bug, and it must be run each session with no dual-boot or rest mode because nothing is written to the internal SSD.
  • The release includes a builder for a bootable Ubuntu 24.04 image plus tools for M.2 installs, fan control, and CPU and GPU boost settings.
  • Once running, Ubuntu can use all eight Zen 2 cores and the RDNA 2 GPU to output up to 4K at 60 Hz, and demos showed GTA V with ray tracing and Spider-Man at 1440p at 60 fps, though some displays may need troubleshooting.
  • Support is limited to select 3.xx–4.xx versions for now, with possible work on 1.xx, 2.xx, or even 5.xx later at lower priority, echoing past PS3 Linux efforts that showed how vendor updates can close such avenues.
