PS5-Linux Goes Public, Turning Some PS5s Into Temporary Linux PCs

The release targets disc-based consoles on older firmware for Ubuntu gaming without permanent modification.

Overview

  • ps5-linux, which went live on GitHub on Wednesday, provides a documented way to boot Ubuntu 24.04 on compatible PS5 Phat consoles.
  • Only disc-based units on 3.xx or 4.xx firmware are supported, and the umtx2 jailbreak must run each time because this is a soft mod.
  • The toolkit includes a Linux payload, a build script for a bootable image, M.2 NVMe install tools, and utilities to raise CPU/GPU clocks and set fan curves.
  • Nguyen's demos show GTA V with ray tracing at 60 frames per second and Spider-Man at 1440p/60, with HDMI output up to 4K limited to 60Hz and occasional Wi‑Fi reconnect steps.
  • Linux can live on an add‑on M.2 drive while the internal SSD stays untouched, and Nguyen says the process will not brick consoles, recalling earlier PlayStation Linux efforts like PS3's OtherOS.
