Proton Mail Lets Users Send and Receive Gmail Inside Its App

The integration imports recent Gmail messages, keeps new mail synced and removes trackers to make a staged move off Google more practical.

Overview

  • Proton announced the Gmail connection on Thursday, May 28, 2026, adding a feature that imports recent Gmail messages and lets users send from their Gmail address inside Proton Mail.
  • Users enable the feature in Proton Mail’s Import via Easy Switch settings, which imports past conversations and keeps new Gmail messages synced into the Proton inbox.
  • Proton applies its protections to Gmail content viewed in Proton Mail by stripping trackers, removing ads and filtering spam while saying it does not scan emails to build ad profiles.
  • The company warns the integration is a transitional tool because Google still has access to messages that remain in users’ Gmail accounts and can read mail that lands there.
  • When both correspondents use Proton Mail, messages exchanged between connected Gmail addresses can become end-to-end encrypted, which Proton presents as an incentive to migrate contacts and reduce Google exposure.
