Prosecutors and Family Seek 26 Years for Santiago Laiglesia in Helena Jubany’s 2001 Killing

The filings set up a judge's decision on whether the 2001 case goes to a jury trial.

Overview

  • Barcelona prosecutors, in a filing Tuesday, asked for 26 years in prison for Laiglesia for murder and illegal detention and requested a provisional dismissal of the case against Xavier Jiménez and Ana Echaguibel.
  • The prosecution says Jubany was drugged in the early hours of December 2, 2001, taken to a rooftop in Sabadell and thrown off, and it alleges Laiglesia took part in some or all of those acts.
  • The victim’s family, acting as a private accuser, also filed a brief seeking 20 years for murder plus 6 for illegal detention and €600,000 in damages.
  • The judge will hold a preliminary hearing next to decide whether to open an oral trial and to fix the witness and expert lists for a possible jury at Barcelona’s provincial court.
  • The family says there are signs linking Jiménez to anonymous notes sent to Jubany before her death, but it argues those clues do not show his direct role in the killing at this stage of the case.
