Prosecutor Details Cannibalism in La Serena Prison Killing

Investigators are examining why ordered inmate transfers were not carried out.

Overview

  • Prosecutor Eduardo Yáñez said the victim died from a knife wound to the neck and that the attacker consumed body parts, including an eye, ears, hands and part of the neck.
  • Prison staff discovered the killing during the morning desencierro routine in module 91, where the two inmates shared a cell.
  • The alleged perpetrator was identified as 21-year-old Manuel Ignacio Fuentes Martínez and the victim as 26-year-old Felipe Sepúlveda Ramos.
  • Fuentes is isolated in a maximum-security unit as the case proceeds in ordinary justice, and the victim’s remains were sent to the Servicio Médico Legal for autopsy.
  • Reports indicate transfer orders issued days earlier for Fuentes to Rancagua and for Sepúlveda to Antofagasta were not executed, and Gendarmería opened an internal administrative inquiry.
