Prosecutor Charges Two in Mott Community College Restroom Shooting After Ruling It Self-Defense

Neither the wounded man nor the shooter is affiliated with the college, according to campus officials.

Overview

  • Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton determined the Jan. 10 restroom gunfire at Ballenger Field House was lawful self-defense by Christopher Gill.
  • Malik Zamir Henderson, 23, of Flint, faces three felonies: gang membership, assault with intent to rob while unarmed, and assault with intent to do great bodily harm.
  • Gill, 23, a licensed concealed carrier, was cited for carrying a concealed handgun in a sports arena, a civil infraction that could suspend his license and require forfeiture of the gun.
  • Investigators say Henderson and a group assaulted Gill in the restroom, with Henderson recording the beating, before Gill fired a single shot through his hoodie that struck Henderson.
  • Mott Community College announced walk-through metal detectors, a stricter bag policy, and increased public-safety staffing for upcoming games following the incident.
