ProRail Says Level-Crossing Cameras Cut Violations as Pilot Logs 33,000 Offenses

ProRail targets a 44-camera network pending approvals.

Overview

  • The network now counts 32 cameras nationwide, of which 30 are active, with a planned expansion to 44 once agencies sign off.
  • ProRail reports declines at many monitored crossings, with about 60% of sites showing fewer fines and location-specific drops ranging from roughly 40% (Baarn Torenlaan) to 80% (Utrecht Mereveldseweg).
  • In Gelderland, six cameras recorded 2,739 violations, led by Zevenaar’s Stationsplein with 960 in 43 weeks, while Twello sites show faster declines than Duiven, Tricht and Zevenaar.
  • Offenders are photographed when crossing on red or driving off before barriers fully open, split nationally at 48% and 52% respectively, with a 3.5-second grace period and fines of €320 for cars and €220 for mopeds or speed pedelecs.
  • Some locations show little or no improvement, which ProRail is studying as part of a safety push to curb life-threatening behavior and reduce rail disruptions.
