Pro‑Palestine March and Rival Demo Pass Peacefully in Scarva Under Heavy PSNI Deployment

Police described their operation as appropriate.

Overview

  • A procession organised by the Ireland‑Palestine Solidarity Campaign moved from Lurgan toward Newry and passed Scarva without major incident.
  • The Police Service of Northern Ireland deployed officers in riot gear, armoured Land Rovers and water cannon and blocked the bridge linking the towpath and village to keep the groups apart.
  • The Parades Commission had authorised the march with conditions that banned entry to Scarva and also approved a separate Scarva Bridge demonstration that carried rules against provocative behaviour.
  • Hundreds of counter‑protesters displaying Israel and Union flags gathered to oppose the march while IPSC organisers said their participants were well stewarded and faced harassment from some local opponents.
  • The operation included planned evidence‑gathering by police and has prompted calls from unionist politicians for a review, with the event contrasted to last year’s march which saw minor disorder and several arrests.
