Overview
- After a January 20 inspection in Chelem, Progreso, Profepa ordered a total temporary closure of a coastal mangrove wetland where recent cutting, burning and lotification were documented.
- The affected mangrove area was reported as 5,749 square meters by several outlets, while one report cited cubic meters, and authorities opened an administrative case and placed seals at the site.
- Inspectors found the Chelem property divided into seven lots with fresh stumps, burn evidence, wooden posts and yellow tape, including two preassigned name signs for would-be occupants.
- In a separate January 26 action in San Bartolomé, Villa de Guerrero, Estado de México, Profepa shut an unauthorized embankment project along the Río Los Cuervos and secured equipment used on site.
- Profepa also closed works at the CRÍO Hoctún poultry facility over an illegal change of forest land use affecting 8.9 hectares, while related oversight has included an expanded criminal complaint and FGR-led searches that seized machinery and 39 sacks of charcoal.
