Profeco Rolls Out PACIC Labels in Major Supermarkets

The program sets a 910 peso reference for 24 essentials.

Overview

  • Profeco, which announced the rollout Thursday during the Mañanera, has begun placing PACIC shelf labels in Soriana, Chedraui and La Comer.
  • The labels point shoppers to the 24 items in the reference basket across different aisles rather than a single pre-packed bundle.
  • The agency set the basket’s total at a 910 peso reference for families, working with retailer group ANTAD on a voluntary rollout.
  • Profeco reported recent easing or stability in eight staples, citing examples such as eggs at 47.40 pesos for 18 and whole chicken at 38.99 pesos per kilo, with declines also seen in bananas, limes, black beans, pork and rice.
  • Price tracking now includes a heat map and the “Quién es Quién en los Precios” tool online, and the agency says the in-store labels will extend to more chains.
