Profeco Launches Valentine’s Day Sweep as Price Checks Show Wide Gaps on Chocolates

Inspectors are in high‑demand shops through Feb. 15, with on‑site help desks, visible price displays, and the prospect of fines or temporary closures for violations.

Overview

  • The nationwide operation runs Feb. 13–15 to enforce Mexico’s consumer law across florists, restaurants, hotels, cinemas, jewelry and department stores, gift shops, apparel and shoe retailers, and more.
  • Profeco’s early‑February review of 25 chocolate products found sharp disparities, such as Hershey’s Kisses 120 g at 64 pesos in Chedraui Cuernavaca versus 129 pesos in Sanborns Cancún.
  • Lindt Lindor 168 g ranged from 181 pesos at Chedraui Plaza América (Coyoacán) to 329 pesos at Sears León, Sears Tuxtla Gutiérrez, and Sanborns Querétaro, with similar gaps on other variants.
  • Other examples include Lindt Lindor milk 168 g at 187 pesos in Walmart Campeche versus 359 pesos in Liverpool La Gran Plaza, Zapopan, and Turin tequila‑filled 180 g at 188–275 pesos depending on the store.
  • Consumers are urged to compare prices and report abuses via the Teléfono del Consumidor (55 5568 8722, 800 468 8722) or Profeco’s X (@AtencionProfeco, @Profeco) and Facebook (ProfecoOficial), with reminders that tipping is voluntary, displayed prices must be final, and promotions must be honored.
