Overview
- Profeco’s consumer lab analyzed 35 peanut products—17 salted and 18 Japanese-style—in a study published on November 2.
- Measured sodium exceeded label claims in nine products, including First Street, Golden Hills, Golden Nuts (Barcel), Great Value, Nature Sun Español, Sol, Selecto Brand and Snack Club, with Nature Sun Español registering 1,124 mg/100 g versus 307.3 mg declared.
- Golden Hills salted peanuts and Nature Sun Español seasoned peanuts lacked the required “Exceso de sodio” warning seal despite qualifying by their sodium content.
- Botanas Mariquita Japanese peanuts failed to list ingredients and showed errors in the nutrition table, which violates NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010.
- All tested items met declared net content and rancidity standards, and Profeco urges consumers to read labels and prefer natural or unsalted peanuts, noting no penalties or recalls have been announced.
