Private Firearms and Carry Permits Climb in Saxony, 2025 Data Show

A Left party lawmaker attributes the rise to perceived insecurity, warning that broader non-lethal carry creates new safety risks.

  • By the end of 2025, Saxony recorded nearly 158,000 registered firearms, up about 2,500 year over year and roughly 11,000 since 2020.
  • The number of registered private gun owners reached 32,800, an increase of about 300 from the previous year.
  • Kleiner Waffenschein permits rose to 25,155, up 459, allowing the public carry of blank-firing, irritant and signal weapons.
  • Municipal authorities conducted 1,180 mostly unannounced checks of gun owners, with objections in about 17% of cases and 148 permits revoked, including 26 small weapons permits.
  • The Interior Ministry reported 1,160 previously legal firearms or parts as missing at the start of 2026, and Erzgebirgskreis held about 10,000 permits, the highest in the state.
