Prisoner Who Broke Jewish Chaplain’s Jaw Gets 11 Years Added to Life Term

The judge said the antisemitic attack showed a very high risk of future violence.

Overview

  • Joseph Gynane, 41, received an extra 11 years at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday, with six years in prison and five on extended licence added to his life sentence.
  • He admitted in March to racially aggravated grievous bodily harm for a September 14, 2025 assault on a visiting Jewish chaplain at HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire.
  • During the attack he shouted “Allahu Akbar,” punched the chaplain from behind, continued despite PAVA spray from an officer, and left the victim with a broken jaw and thumb treated at Peterborough City Hospital.
  • Moved to segregation after the assault, he covered his cell walls with “Free Palestine” and “Death to the IDF,” which the judge cited as evidence of antisemitic and ideologically disturbing views.
  • The added term sits on top of a life sentence for a 2019 murder and stabbing, leaving his earliest release at 2055, and police said the outcome should deter hate crimes against chaplains and other prison staff.
