Overview
- The Princess of Wales met patients, families and staff during a visit to Evelina London on Monday 6 July and toured new cardiac facilities while hearing the hospital’s long-term vision.
- Evelina opened two child-focused cardiac areas, Edward Ward and Galaxy Outpatients, that are already taking temporary inpatient transfers of children’s heart, lung and critical care cases from Royal Brompton.
- Hospital leaders presented a developing plan to bring together specialist teams from The Royal Marsden, St George’s and Evelina to provide children’s cancer and blood-and-marrow-transplant care in one location.
- Evelina and its charity are backing a capital campaign and a proposed new hospital building expected in the early 2030s to expand capacity after demand tripled since 2005 to about 104,000 children a year.
- The Princess’s personal warmth and recent health story raised the profile of the proposals and charity fundraising, and the next steps to watch are formal agreements between hospitals and successful fundraising to enable the consolidation.
