Prince Hisahito Concludes Kyoto Coming-of-Age Rites, Visits Noh-Costume Workshop

The University of Tsukuba freshman used spring break for a private two-day visit that paired formal mausoleum observances with hands-on engagement in Nishijin weaving.

Overview

  • On Feb. 26 he paid respects at the Meiji Emperor’s Fushimi-Momoyama Mausoleum in morning dress, offering a tamagushi.
  • He also visited the adjacent tomb of Empress Shōken and later the mausoleums of Emperor Kōmei and Empress Eishō at Sennyū-ji.
  • The Kyoto itinerary spanned Feb. 26–27 as a one-night private trip undertaken to report the completion of his coming-of-age rites.
  • On Feb. 27 he toured the 1897-founded Sasaki Noh Costume atelier in Kyoto, observed Nishijin weaving, and tried operating a handloom.
  • The atelier’s president said the prince worked the loom with notable dexterity and appeared to enjoy the experience.
