Prime Video Pledges $2 Billion to Expand Originals and Sports in Latin America

The company says the funding will build local production capacity to grow audiences through new local shows, expanded live sports and direct digital storefronts.

Overview

  • Prime Video, which announced the plan Thursday at a Mexico City showcase, committed more than $2 billion for 2027–2030 to boost original programming, licensed content and sports across Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Chile.
  • The streamer unveiled a 2027 slate of more than 25 new local titles and said it aims to more than double local originals across the five countries by 2030.
  • Prime Video expanded live sports in the region by offering over 200 NBA games per season in Brazil and Mexico and bringing NBA coverage to Argentina, Colombia and Chile while agreeing to carry 38 Mexico national team home matches beginning in late September over four years.
  • The platform will open direct third‑party subscriptions and rentals/purchases in six additional Latin American territories later in 2026, listing Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru and Argentina as initial markets.
  • The company will fund behind‑the‑camera training and production programs such as Brasil no Set and a new SAE Institute partnership to grow local crews and post‑production capacity, a move that could create jobs, raise regional exportable content and intensify competition with other streamers.
