Pre-Dawn Attacks Torch Tangkhul Villages on IndiaMyanmar Border

Leaders call the strike a test of India’s border policing.

Overview

  • Heavily armed militants hit the Tangkhul Naga villages of Choro, Namlee and Wanglee in Kamjong early Thursday, burning roughly 15 to 18 homes, injuring several people, and leaving two residents untraceable.
  • Local Naga groups and MLA Leishiyo Keishing alleged Myanmar-based Kuki fighters from the KNA-B, backed by the People’s Defence Force, crossed over to raid the villages, while the KNA-B publicly denied any role.
  • The Tangkhul Naga Long said the attackers used drones and heavy weapons during the 3:30 to 4:00 a.m. assault, a detail security officials have not confirmed.
  • Assam Rifles said troops moved in under fire, evacuated 15 civilians, secured damaged houses, and handed an apprehended armed suspect with an AK-47 to police.
  • Authorities have stepped up the response with fresh border patrols and the reported arrest of a KNA-B cadre in Churachandpur, as critics press for stronger deployments along Manipur’s 398-km unfenced frontier.
