Prada Releases India-Made Kolhapuri-Inspired Sandals With 3-Year Artisan Training Program

The move signals a deeper tie-up with Indian craft bodies after last year’s appropriation outcry.

Overview

  • Prada launched the limited-edition sandals on Monday through 40 selected stores and online, with each pair priced at about 750 euros.
  • Production takes place in India with artisans from Maharashtra and Karnataka who make traditional Kolhapuri chappals.
  • Prada is funding a three-year training program that runs in six-month modules for 180 artisans, with the first course starting this summer and applications opening next month for 30 seats.
  • NIFT and KILT will deliver the courses, LIDCOM and LIDKAR are formal partners, and selected participants can continue training at the Prada Group Academy in Italy.
  • The project follows June 2025 criticism over uncredited Kolhapuri-like designs and engages a craft recognized by India’s 2019 Geographical Indication for eight producing districts.
