Prada Mode Turns the Chelsea Hotel into a Working Broadcast for Satellites II

The takeover turned guest rooms into micro studios that streamed members-only programming to public audiences through a bespoke cable-style Prada Mode Channel.

Overview

  • Prada Mode’s 14th edition, called Satellites II, transformed New York’s Hotel Chelsea in early June into a site-specific takeover curated by Nicolas Winding Refn and Hideo Kojima.
  • The project treated the building as a live studio by installing micro-television sets in guest rooms and beaming a bespoke Prada Mode Channel into every in-room TV while also making that channel viewable remotely.
  • Physical interventions extended beyond the hotel with reflective silver-painted taxis, mystery vending machines inside the Chelsea, and a party that converted Katz’s Delicatessen into a late-night dance floor.
  • A program of talks, screenings and performances featured participants including Sophie Thatcher, Lydia Lunch, Precious Renee Tucker, Grandmaster Flash and guests such as Amanda Gorman and Abel Ferrara.
  • Satellites II continues Prada Mode’s itinerant private-club model launched in 2018 and shows how the brand is using broadcast formats and city interventions to widen access to a traditionally members-only cultural program.
