Powerful Explosions Rock Ta' Lourdes Fireworks Factory in Malta

Officials say the site was empty when detonations began, which likely prevented mass casualties.

Overview

  • The explosions started early Monday morning at the Ta' Lourdes fireworks plant in northern Malta, with a first large detonation reported around 06:30–06:35 local time and further blasts continuing for hours.
  • Two men working in nearby fields suffered minor injuries and were taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment and observation.
  • The blasts sent a tall column of black smoke into the sky, scattered pyrotechnic debris, shook buildings and broke windows, and caused damage to nearby farms and livestock operations.
  • Police, the Civil Protection Department, the Armed Forces of Malta and health teams were dispatched to the scene and emergency crews remained on site as judicial authorities opened an inquiry into the cause.
  • Prime Minister Robert Abela posted support for those affected and officials say the factory was unoccupied because the first shift had not yet started, a detail credited with averting greater loss of life.
